After a nine-month wait, the second season of “The Walking Dead” finally begins Sunday as part of the “AMC Fearfest,” more than 300 hours of Halloween-themed programming that includes more than 60 films through Oct. 31. That fame almost didn’t happen. For seven years, Kirkman turned down offers to adapt his stories — a tale of a group of human survivors in a world filled with zombies — to TV or film because he was certain it would be done poorly.
There’s a slight uneasiness for this second season because Darabont has left the series. But the constant will be Kirkman’s books as the basis for the series. “One of the things we set out to do from day one, and one of the things that Robert Kirkman has been adamant about, is that we take some twists and turns. We have some equally unexpected twists and turns coming up in Season 2, but a lot of stuff you’ll recognize,” says Joel Stillerman, senior vice president of original programming, production and digital content for AMC.BTIG analyst Richard Greenfied says that Jersey Shore is an important frame of reference for The Walking Dead because Jersey Shore helped expand MTV beyond its core viewers.

Walking Dead (which AMC owns) could have the same impact on the cable network. If that show also turns out to be a hit, AMC will gain a lot of momentum as a station that shows edgy fare that can actually attract an audience. Since AMC owns The Walking Dead, the network was able to sell the first season to Netflix which premiered it on streaming just before season 2 started. Greenfield believes that giving newcomers the opportunity to watch all of the first season so close to the premier helped goose ratings for the second season.
